How to choose darts?

There are many different types of darts on the market, from brass to tungsten. At present, the most popular one is tungsten nickel dart. Tungsten is a heavy metal suitable for darts.

Tungsten has been used in Darts since the early 1970s because it weighs twice as much as brass, but darts made of tungsten are only half the size of brass. The introduction of tungsten darts revolutionized the game, and this is not an exaggeration. Tungsten darts allowed two mutually interrelated things to happen. As darts became smaller, they also became heavier, and heavier darts radically improved player’s scores!

A tungsten dart, being heavier than a brass or plastic dart, will fly through the air in a straighter line and with more force; which means bounce outs are less likely to happen. Therefore, heavier darts provided players with more control during the throw and made tighter grouping more likely. This means that dart players are more likely to achieve close grouping of darts in smaller areas and are more likely to get the highest score of 180!

Because 100% tungsten is very brittle, manufacturers must make tungsten alloys, which mix tungsten with other metals (mainly nickel) and other properties such as copper and zinc. All of these ingredients are mixed into a mold, compressed at several tons of pressure and heated in a furnace to over 3000 ℃. The obtained blank is then machined to produce a polished rod with smooth surface. Finally, the dart barrel with the required shape, weight and grip (knurling) is processed with the bare rod.

Most tungsten darts indicate the percentage of tungsten content, and the commonly used range is 80-97%. Generally, the higher the tungsten content, the thinner the dart can be compared with the brass dart equivalent. Thin darts help group and are more likely to hit the elusive 180. The weight, shape and design of darts are all personal choices, which is why we can see all kinds of weights and designs now. There is no better dart, because every thrower has his own preference.
